Grade 1

Grade 1 Curriculum (Ages 6–7)

In Grade 1 at Tashi Waldorf School, children step into an exciting new world of formal learning — one that is rich with stories, movement, beauty, and meaning. At this stage, young learners are ready to explore reading, writing, and arithmetic through methods that honour their imagination and developmental needs.

Our Grade 1 curriculum includes:

Language & Literacy:
Children begin learning letters and their sounds through stories, pictures, and movement, bringing language to life. Writing begins with imagination‑rich activities, and early reading grows from the children’s own writing and storytelling. Daily recitation, poems, and seasonal stories deepen vocabulary and love for language.

Mathematics:
Numbers are introduced through games, counting, movement, and rhythmic activities that make math feel alive. Children explore the four processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using hands‑on experiences and imaginative number stories.

Art & Form Drawing:
Drawing straight and curved lines, patterns, and designs develops focus, fine motor skills, and preparation for handwriting. Painting, beeswax modelling, and creative art support expression and deepen understanding of core lesson.

Handwork & Practical Arts:
Children begin handwork like knitting, sewing, or weaving, supporting coordination, patience, and purposeful focus. These activities build confidence and reinforce math and pattern thinking in a playful, tangible way.  Nature & Science
Nature study, outdoor observation, and seasonal awareness help children see learning in the world around them. Stories and explorations foster curiosity, observation skills, and reverence for life.

Music & Movement:
Daily songs, circle games, rhythm activities, and simple instrument play strengthen coordination, memory, and a sense of community. Movement is woven through lessons to keep learning joyful and embodied.

Social & Emotional Growth:
Circle time, group verses, cooperative games, and class plays help children learn empathy, communication, and teamwork. A warm, stable rhythm gives a sense of security and belonging.

The Waldorf way in Grade 1 makes learning alive, artistic, and connected. Instead of drills or worksheets, children learn through stories, movement, rhythm, and hands‑on experience, fostering deep understanding and joy in discovery.
